Happy Moment #42: NPR's Ask Me Another

A few months back when I saw that tickets were going on sale for a St Louis recording of a game show on NPR called "Ask Me Another," I was so ON this! I don't often get the chance to listen to the show regularly but I try when I can (usually when I am in the car). And the humor of Ophira Eisenberg and Jonathan Coulton has always made me laugh -- though if I had to be honest, I often feel pretty stupid trying to figure out the quiz answers!

Even though I snagged tickets for me and Jim on the first day of the sales, we got a spot on the balcony towards the back (Yep -- this show is THAT popular!). Con -- hard to see things up close. Pro -- it is a radio show so the sound is perfect!

Jim and I got there as soon as the doors opened so I could snag a drink at the bar (the Pageant, one of the most awesomest theaters in St Louis -- has a bar!). The show started a few minutes past 7:30 PM (the scheduled time) and the first person to come out and talk with us was the show's producer/ director. He had us practice laughing on cue and mentioned that after the show was over that there might be some additional taping of anything that needed to be re-voiced. And then ....Jonathan Coulton came out on stage with his guitar and had us sing a song with him (I suppose he was sorta the warm up act!). I never thought about how the guy looked before but that voice! I knew that voice!

Then came Ophira and she warmed the crowd up with some hilarious jokes! The contestants came on (there were four local people in all) and most of the games had some connection to St Louis (like recognizing a famous St Louisan's voice or answering trivia questions).

The guests were a musical duo Matt and Kim (I had no idea who they were before the taping but now that I have investigated their music I kinda like them). Kim kept saying "fuck" (in terms of her partner/husband and how they met!) so it was interesting to watch the show reedit some of that at the end of the taping (to make it more G rated).

My phone did not get good pictures but the above shows a few pics. The entire taping took about 2 hours all together and I am guessing a lot of what happens gets edited out since the show itself is an hour.

These types of date nights with Jim make me happy -- and it was wonderful to hear him laugh so much, too!
